5/20/2023 0 Comments Ableton live 10 tutorial![]() Only available for Mac and its workflow isn’t as streamlined as Live’s, but it does offer features ideal for live performers. For advanced MIDI and audio editing it’s hard to beat, though it doesn’t offer the performance capabilities of Live. The original MPE DAW, this has been around since the late ’80s yet remains on the cutting edge of music production. It also includes The Grid, a supremely powerful modular environment for creating your own effects, instruments and more. Live’s closest rival is a DAW with a similar interface, plus powerful audio and modulation routing capabilities. It’s an easy-to-use solution to a long-requested feature that will no doubt delight those eagerly awaiting it. Alternatively, draw mode can be used - just drag over part of a clip and it will be placed on the main lane. ![]() To comp the recorded material one selects the desired section of a track lane, and presses the enter key to place it on the main lane. Take lanes can be viewed by right-clicking on a track header and selecting Show Take Lanes, and they’re displayed under the main lane in a fashion similar to multiple automation lanes. Comping works in a straightforward manner: record audio or MIDI over a looped section of the project and the data will still be recorded to a single clip, but each cycle will be placed on a new take lane. Performance and verdictįor those who use Live to track MIDI and audio performances, the new comping and linked track capabilities will be the most exciting addition. ![]() ![]() It also makes polyphonic aftertouch available on Live’s Push devices. MPE can be used without a compatible hardware controller, and can be programmed directly into the new Expressions tab next to the Notes and Envelopes tabs in the MIDI clip editor. MPE also features release velocity, which works much like the familiar ‘attack’ velocity, but applied to the end of notes. MPE makes it possible to pitchbend individual notes, plus there are now individual Slide and Pressure parameters for use as modulation sources with discrete values for each note. Live now features support for MIDI Polyphonic Expression (MPE) for more nuanced control over compatible instruments. ![]()

Overall, I have found DemoPro to be a lot more solid. Of the two annotation programs, I’ve settled on using ScreenBrush, but it’s a close call. I’ve found that there is a little bit of a knack to this, but it’s pretty easy once you get the hang of it. Here is a quick little demo I recorded (watch to the end to see both apps): Then you write and clear the slide when you are done. ĭuring the actual presentation, you will need to invoke the writing software using a hotkey (by default alt-tab for ScreenBrush or ctrl-s for DemoPro). If you’re recording, it should be possible to delay the start long enough to allow you to do this. Once this has been done once it’s fine for the rest of the presentation. If I don’t, then the first time I try to write I end up exiting out of Keynote and just seeing my background. ![]() Important: For reasons I don’t really understand, I’ve found that I have to advance one slide (and then go back) by tapping the pencil on the iPad (equivalent to clicking the mouse) before toggling DemoPro or ScreenBrush. If recording, the screen recording software obviously has to be started first. It seems to work better if it’s launched after the iPad is set up. DemoPro is pretty solid and can just be left running at all times if you like, whereas I’ve found ScreenBrush to be a bit more finicky. I have always used a physical connection through a lightning cable, but wireless Sidecar does seem to be very robust. If you’re presenting, you’ll want to set the iPad to mirror the projector. Target the iPad in Sidecar (from the menu bar).Just be sure to wait a beat once it starts recording a couple of times I’ve had it cut off my first word or two. It comes with all Macs and is surprisingly good. If you are recording the lecture, you also need screen capturing software. I tried a couple that are available (and pretty cheap) in the Mac App Store: DemoPro and ScreenBrush. You also need an app that lets you draw on your screen with a mouse. Unfortunately, I don’t think it is possible to this with a regular stylus, although I haven’t looked into it. I’m using an original iPad Pro with the original pencil. To do this, you need a Mac running Catalina and an Apple-Pencil-compatible iPad. I was particularly interested in seeing whether I could take advantage of the macOS’s new Sidecar feature, which allows an iPad to serve as an external display (and supports tablet-like input through the Apple Pencil). I was never really able to get this to work: I would constantly toggle out of the annotation mode accidentally. ![]()

The Archive Suite offers scanner and digital imaging software in a cost-effective package. The extra scan does take longer to carry out than the simple scan without the IR pass of course, but to my mind the improvement in the image - especially for a lot the the older slides - is well worth it.Together with Epson we provide all Epson Perfection V550 Photo owners with a free copy of our scanner software SilverFast SE:įrom entry-level software SilverFast SE to professional version SilverFast Ai Studio, an appropriate software is available for every user. Now obviously this is manipulation of the image, so purists may baulk at this, but to my mind it is simply removing marks which weren't in the original scene and as long as it makes a good job I'm happy to do that. The third image is the result of allowing the software to remove the marks. There is a slider control which can be used to set the level of detection, but I've found the automatic setting is actually pretty accurate. All the individual marks have been identified and in this view they have been marked with a red colour to make them visible. The second image is the result of carrying out the IR scan. As you can see there is a lot of marking on this slide - some is probably surface dust, but a lot of it is probably quite deeply ingrained on the slide emulsion so the chances are the slide would be damaged trying to remove it. This is a glass mounted slide so it isn't a quick or trivial operation to get the slide out of the mount and clean it. The first image is a magnified portion of a slide with all the marks showing. The images above show the amount of difference this option makes. With SilverFast however, I was pleasantly surprised. I had actually done something similar with the original Epson software which I used to use, but found that it didn't really make much difference so I assumed that it was just a gimmicky option. A couple of days ago however I had a series of slides which had a really significant amount of dirt on them, so I decided to try playing around with the iSRD option which is supposed to remove marks. I've been scanning quite a lot of slides over the last few weeks for the Found Film site, and up until a few days ago I've just been placing the slides on the scanner in the slide mount, doing a pre-scan to get the framing and then batch scanning them using SilverFast 8.
